Smart Green School Initiative: STEM for Sustainability | FIRST Global Challenge 2026

As part of FIRST Global Challenge 2026 Social Media Challenge #4, Team TEB Innovations conducted an environmental assessment within our school and surrounding community and identified two key sustainability challenges: improper waste disposal and inefficient plant monitoring. To address these issues, our team organized a cleanup activity and developed two STEM-based solutions. The first solution is an Automatic Smart Waste Bin that encourages proper waste disposal through sensor-based automation. The second solution is a Smart Plant Monitoring System using a Soil Moisture Sensor and ESP8266, helping monitor soil conditions and support healthier plant growth. This initiative demonstrates how STEM education, environmental responsibility, and innovation can work together to create cleaner, greener, and more sustainable communities. By combining community action with practical technology, we aim to inspire positive environmental change and promote sustainable development. #BYKM2026

How Our Robotics Team Used Testing & Engineering Iteration to Improve Robot Performance | #STEMAthlete Week 2

At TEB INNOVATIONS, we believe that real engineering is built through experimentation, testing, failure analysis, and continuous improvement.

As part of Week 2 of the #STEMAthlete challenge, themed “The Science of Training,” our team documented the complete robotics development and testing process to showcase how evidence-based engineering improves system performance and reliability.

This week’s challenge focused on three important engineering phases:

  1. Planning and CAD Strategy
  2. Building and Field Testing
  3. Reviewing Failures and Implementing Improvements

Our objective was not simply to show a finished robot, but to demonstrate the real process behind robotics development — including technical challenges, debugging sessions, failed tests, and performance optimization.

Planning and System Design

The first phase involved planning the robot structure, sensor layout, and communication strategy. Using CAD concepts and mechanical design discussions, the team analyzed weight distribution, wheel alignment, and component placement to improve balance and movement efficiency.

The planning stage also included:
• Sensor positioning strategy
• RF communication layout
• Power distribution planning
• Mechanical stability analysis
• Coding structure preparation

This phase helped the team identify potential issues before assembly and testing began.

Hands-On Building and Robot Testing

The second phase focused on practical implementation. Team members worked on:
• Hardware assembly
• Wiring and electronics integration
• ESP32 and Arduino programming
• Sensor calibration
• Motor testing
• Communication testing
• Real-world field trials

One of the biggest technical challenges we encountered during testing was unstable RF communication between the controller and the robot system.

During field tests, the robot showed delayed motor response and inconsistent movement due to inefficient transmission handling and communication latency. Instead of ignoring the issue, the team began analyzing serial monitor outputs, testing transmission timing, and observing packet behavior under different conditions.

This testing phase included multiple failed attempts, but each failure provided useful engineering evidence that helped improve the system.

Engineering Review and Optimization

After reviewing the testing data, the team implemented several improvements:
• Optimized packet transmission timing
• Reduced communication overhead
• Improved response synchronization
• Refined motor control logic
• Adjusted calibration values
• Enhanced movement stability

The result was smoother movement, faster response time, and improved system reliability during field operation.

Why This Project Matters

This project represents more than robotics development. It demonstrates:
• Engineering problem-solving
• Team collaboration
• Evidence-based iteration
• Technical analysis
• Real-world STEM learning
• Innovation through experimentation

At TEB INNOVATIONS, we strongly believe that innovation comes from learning through testing and continuously improving through evidence and teamwork.
